Founding and First Motorcycles

As many might already know, Yamaha Corporation first began in 1887 as a manufacturer of musical instruments. Originally named Nippon Gakki, they built pianos, reed organs, and began creating parts for many musical instruments as time went on. However, in 1953, the fourth generation President, Genichi Kawakami, saw a great opportunity for the company to use their production skills to branch out and create a new type of product. He considered utility vehicles, auto parts, and even sewing machines, but thanks to the boom in motorcycle appeal following World War II, he jumped on the opportunity to develop the next great bike. In 1955, Yamaha’s first motorcycle, the YA-1, was created, and with it came the important Yamaha subsidiary, Yamaha Motor Company. But this new branch didn’t just bring another simple motorcycle manufacturer to the industry. Instead, thanks to Genichi’s ambitious ideology, which quotes, “If you are going to make it, make it the very best there is,” the YA-1 was one of the greatest vehicles on two wheels anyone had ever seen. It even won third place in the Mt. Fuji Ascent Race and first in the Asama Highlands Race the same year it was released. Since then, the aspiration for excellence at Yamaha Motor Company has never died down. They’ve only continued to make great bikes, dominant products, and millions of happy riders.

Entrance to Watercraft

By 1986, Yamaha had excelled in developing so many products, but there was one key area for powersports that they hadn’t yet extended their vision to: the water. In 1984, popular American models featured pumps with 15 horsepower that were positioned right on the board models. Yamaha wanted to up this number significantly to create a more intense ride, so over the next two years, they developed many prototypes with mixed results, striving for an engine that more than tripled the 15 horsepower pump. By 1986, they had finally created something spectacular—the WaveRunner 500—which revolutionized the marine industry by creating the PWC market. After this, watercraft were never the same again, and Yamaha was proud to own the title as one of the leading manufacturers of small watercraft. Just like their entry into the motorcycle industry led to accelerated results, they’ve held their place in the marine world for 30 years now, continually making some of the best PWC in the world.

Looking Forward

After a long history of creating quality vehicles and products, both Yamaha and its subsidiary, Yamaha Motor Company, strive to continue pushing the standard for PWC and motorcycle manufacturing forward. Today, they have released some of the finest bikes that you’ve ever seen on the road, and you can get one of these new bikes today at our dealership. And while they started with just the Waverunner, Yamaha has branched out even more in the PWC industry, with models like the EX Sport, FX Cruiser SVHO, VX Cruiser, and much more.
