Early Days

The Yamaha® Corporation was founded in 1887 by Torakusu Yamaha in the Shizuoka Prefecture of Japan. Initially, the company made musical instruments like pianos and organs, a legacy that remains in their logo: three crossed tuning forks in a circle. These tools are used to tune pianos.

Following World War II, several Japanese companies decided they should diversify their product lines in order to make up for lost time. This was also meant to make use of wartime manufacturing machines so they wouldn’t go to waste. The president of Yamaha Corporation at this time was Genichi Kawakami, and he chose to have his company begin producing small engines for motorcycles in addition to their musical instrument lines.

By 1955, the Yamaha Motor Company was ready to split from its parent company, becoming incredibly successful with its line of two-stroke motorcycles. In 1968, Yamaha Motor Company began to manufacture four-stroke engines and more designs were coming off the assembly lines all the time at a rapid pace to meet consumer demand.
